West Auckland local Kanah Andrews-Nahu lifting the bar towards Olympic Gold

They say records are meant to be broken and West Auckland local, Kanah Andrews-Nahu, is doing just that - on an international stage.

Since receiving the Māori Achievement honour at the 2018 Sport Waitākere Excellence Awards, Kanah has beat out international competition to win the Women’s 76kg category at the Arafura Games in Darwin. Not only placing first, Andrews-Nahu also broke three New Zealand records and three Oceania records, continuing her recent record-breaking run. Kanah is set to compete in Fiji at the International Weightlifting Federation Junior World Champs in June.

Sport Waitākere CEO, Lynette Adams, is thrilled to see such talent with roots in West Auckland.

“We are thrilled to watch the rising star that is Kanah Andrews-Nahu. After winning the Māori Achievement Award in 2018, she’s representing Aotearoa on the world-stage and doing us all proud in the process. She puts in the hard yards to realise her dreams and is an inspiration to all aspiring athletes.”

Which local sports stars will join Kanah Andrews-Nahu and have their names etched in time at the 2019 Sport Waitākere Excellence Awards?

Nominations are now open for rising local sports stars, teams and clubs who have done West Auckland proud over the past 12 months.

Sport Waitākere is urging clubs, schools, sports organisations and parents to fill in a short and simple nomination form so the achievements of West Auckland’s rising sports starts can be celebrated. There are 17 categories to enter, ensuring achievements across the sport community in West Auckland are acknowledged.

A panel of independent judges will then select category finalists, with the winners announced at the Sport Waitākere Excellence Awards Dinner at Trusts Arena on Friday 8th November.
