The beats of tradition and the rhythms of heritage filled the air as the West Auckland community came together for a spirited Siva Afi and Drumming workshop. Hosted by Aktive Zone and coordinated by the dedicated Jo Armstrong, this event aimed to embrace the rich cultural heritage of Pasifika communities, infusing it with dance, rhythm, and unity.
Siva Afi, a traditional Samoan fire knife dance, took center stage during this remarkable workshop. The event served as an opportunity to upskill bilingual unit teachers and community leaders, empowering them to share the grace of tradition and the fervour of dance with young Pasifika students in West Auckland. The goal was clear: to keep the next generation culturally engaged and active while ensuring they remain connected to their roots.
Participants in the workshop were treated to an unforgettable day of culture, drums, and fire. The Aktive Zone team provided a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, encouraging everyone to explore new horizons. As a token of appreciation, each participant received their very own drum set and stick, allowing them to practice and perfect their newfound skills.
This workshop was more than just a cultural experience; it was a confidence-building exercise, a call to movement for better health, and a chance to connect or reconnect with one's heritage. The event organizers hope to see more initiatives like this in the near future, strengthening the cultural fabric of West Auckland.
The workshop took place on Wednesday, August 30th, at the YMCA Westgate gym. Among the key external audiences encouraged to engage with this project were bilingual unit teachers, community leaders, and anyone willing to introduce Siva Afi into their schools or communities.
The call to action is clear: place Siva Afi in school bilingual units and invite Aktive Zone to facilitate workshops in schools, equipping teachers with the skills to introduce Siva Afi to Pasifika students as a means of giving them an engaging way to stay active. Supporting Pasifika students in discovering their cultural identity through movement in Siva Afi is a cause worth championing. The project was funded through grassroots funding, emphasizing the community's role in preserving and celebrating cultural heritage.
