8M8's starting in Term 2!

The SPARC funded pilot project is running in St Dominic’s, Liston and Waitakere Colleges and aims to bring non-competitive sport experiences to Year 11 – 13 students who don’t currently play school or club sport.

Through our research in 2009, Sport Waitakere discovered that many students preferred a social environment to the traditional competitive school sport model. 8M8’s will meet this need. After promotional ‘have a go’ lunch time sessions at all 3 schools, the response was huge. Students have entered teams of 8 to play in a weekly social league. There are no other training requirements and the programme is very low cost. The sessions will run throughout Term 2 and 3 on Mondays afterschool. AFL NZ, Waitakere West Auckland Basketball, Netball Waitakere and Auckland Cricket will run skills sessions and games and The Edge radio station will supply music and prizes.

Congratulations to the following iPod touch winners; Francis from Liston College; Maddy from St Dominics College; Lise from Waitakere College.

Following the pilot, Sport Waitakere hopes to roll 8M8’s out into more secondary schools next year. For more information contact Esther Revell, Social Sport Coordinator on esther.revell@sportwaitakere.co.nz
