Healthy Families Waitakere aims to improve people's health lives where they live, learn, work and play in order to prevent chronic disease. In order to slow the growth of obesity and chronic disease, we need to support communities to eat well, be physically active, sustain a healthy weight, be smokefree and only drink alcohol in moderation.
Waitakere is one of ten communities across New Zealand involved in the Government’s wider approach to helping New Zealanders live healthy, active lives. Led by Sport Waitakere, Healthy Families Waitakere is creating a movement for good health in the community. The Healthy Families Waitakere team are working alongside communities to bring local leaders, champions and key people together to think differently about the causes of poor health and coordinate action to make healthy choices easier.
The team work with early childhood education, schools, workplaces, food outlets, sports clubs, marae, businesses, places of worship, local government, health professionals and more to create healthier environments for all.
Healthy Families Waitakere act like glue bringing organisations together to identify, design and implement changes to help people make healthier choices. The team are experimental, innovative, adaptive and enable leadership across organisations, sectors, and communities to make sustainable healthy change. The Healthy Families Waitakere team are guided by 7 Principles and acting together at local, regional, and national levels we will be able to have large-scale reach to our communities.
