SPORT WAITAKERE, Habour Sport, Sport Auckland and counties Manukau Sport are fully committed to supporting Māori sport and physical recreation communities through the “He Oranga Poutama” programme. SPORT WAITAKERE have secured the contract with the collaboration of the above RST's to deliver the He Oranga Poutama programme in Auckland. The He Oranga Poutama ki Tāmaki programme is also supported by a “Roopu Manaaki
” made up of members of the Māori community throughout Tāmaki. The Roopu Manaaki provide strategic advice and support to the programme.
He Oranga Poutama is a Sport NZ
initiative developed to encourage and provide support for Māori to become more active through healthier lifestyles, physical recreation and sport. He Oranga Poutama (HOP) is part of a growing awareness about caring for our own health, improving our wellbeing and determining our future ‘as Māori ’. Click here for "Te Whetu Rehua"
The He Oranga Poutama programme has a goal of, “increasing participation and leadership as Māori in sport and traditional physical activity at community level”.
He Oranga Poutama ki Tāmaki have a team of seven that cover the Tāmaki Makaurau Region. The six Kaiwhakahaere and one manager work across the four Regional Sport Trusts - Counties Manukau Sport, Sport Waitakere, Harbour Sport and Sport Auckland. Click here for HOP team. He Oranga Poutama ki Tāmaki have three key outcomes which are:
1. Kaiwhakahaere participating as leaders in their community.
2. Increased opportunities for whānau to explore, learn and participate as Māori in sport and traditional physical recreation.
3. Revitalisation and further development of sport and traditional physical recreation.
He Oranga Poutama ki Tāmaki use "Te Whetu Rehua" as a framework to prioritising their work and have a particular emphasis on five key settings in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). Those settings are Kōhanga Reo, Kura Māori, Wharekura, Marae and Māori Sporting Organisations. He Oranga Poutama ki Tāmaki also work closely with the Tāmaki Makaurau Regional Sports Trusts (RSTs) with a particular focus on developing and fostering tikanga Māori within those RSTs.
